YouTube Trend Report to Watch
If you haven't seen this already, you may want to keep an eye out for Asi Sharabi's YouTube Trend Report. After the success of his first report, which analyzed the all-time most watched videos, Asi's second report and future ones will discuss the 100 most watched videos of the previous month (and the honor goes to a commentary on excessive police force).
While Asi openly mentions two challenges in analyzing YouTube trends -- the long tail is long, and there doesn't seem to be an inclusive definition of User Generated Content -- he does a great job of breaking the videos into different categories... and links to some "must sees" such as the dark animation Der Bonker ("Adolf, du alte Nazi Sau, kaputaliere doch endlich").
And for an overview of how the top social media and networking sites are ranked against each other, have a look at Mack Collier's breakdown based on Alexa scores and traffic.

I wonder what would martians think if they arrived here and was told to watch YouTube?.

I like the trend towards older people getting involved in youtube, as in the first time guy, it really could open things up, I also came across the clip of old people doing ballet ont he streets which is also intresting as it has a youtube vibe but done by people over 60
